WHO EXPOSES YOUR PRIVACY MORE; APPLE OR FACEBOOK ?

“Facebook collect as much data as possible…”

Both tech giants; Apple & Facebook accuse each other of failing to protect your data properly for a considerable period of time. Apple takes a stance on privacy as one of it's core marketing value. Meanwhile in a recently published letter Jane Horvath, Privacy chief in Apple, addresses Facebook pointing out their privacy practices, arguing the company doesn’t care about people’s privacy.

"Facebook executives have made it clear their intent is to collect as much data as possible across both first- and third-party products to develop and monetize detailed profiles of their users, and this disregard for user privacy continues to expand to include more of their products," Horvath said.

"We developed [App Tracking Transparency] for a single reason: because we share your concerns about users being tracked without their consent and the bundling and reselling of data by advertising networks and data brokers," also mentioned in the letter.

Which means in the newly announced privacy feature for iOS called ‘App Tracking Transparency’ that will require the iPhone users to give their permission for apps to take their data. In previous versions it was set for apps to access the user data without asking permission, by default settings.

This new privacy feature update tends to limit ad-tracking features in apps such as Facebook. However this would be less profitable for advertisers because of less effective tracking. Fortunately Apple decided to delay the feature's rollout to 2021 so developers could have more time to make necessary changes towards their effectiveness.

On the other hand Facebook didn’t keep accepting those complaints, Facebook is accusing Apple of using data privacy as a cover for market dominance.

"Apple claims it's about privacy, but it's about profit. They are using their dominant market position to self-preference their own data collection while making it nearly impossible for their competitors to use the same data," Facebook have mentioned in a statement.

Apple collects data on its iPhone users through an identifier called IDFA, which creates a unique ID for your device for advertisers. Advocates argue that Apple's IDFA violates privacy rights. In fact majority of iOS users don’t change their default privacy settings.

Apps were collecting millions of people's privacy information for their advertising purposes by default, and people will now think more than twice before giving access to collect data for advertising companies due to this prevailed issue.

However Facebook also recently patched a similar vulnerability in Facebook Messenger through its bug bounty program.

The message from was that the social network was just as good at protecting privacy as Apple was. Besides Facebook's argument in the response letter: Apple is just as bad as everyone else.
